Six Bookkeeping Habits That Make Year-End Easier
Good bookkeeping is not just about staying organized. It gives you a clear picture of how your business is doing, helps you catch problems early and makes year-end much simpler and less expensive to prepare. These six habits make the biggest difference for small businesses.
Keep business and personal finances separate. A dedicated business bank account and credit card make it far easier to track income and expenses, and they give you a clean record if the CRA ever has questions.
Save receipts as you go. Snap a photo of each receipt or attach it in your accounting software when you make the purchase. Faded paper receipts in a shoebox are hard to match up months later.
Reconcile your accounts every month. Matching your books to your bank and credit card statements each month catches errors, duplicate charges and missing transactions while they are still easy to fix.
Track the HST you collect and pay. If you are registered, record sales tax separately on every invoice and purchase. Setting aside the HST you collect means the money is there when your return is due.
Use accounting software. Tools like QuickBooks Online connect to your bank, sort transactions automatically and let your accountant work from the same numbers you see, with no spreadsheets passed back and forth.
Talk to your accountant before year-end, not after. Decisions about equipment purchases, how you pay yourself and when to recognize income can make a real difference to your tax bill, but only if they are made before the year closes.
